2015 GC3 Innovators Roundtable - Speakers

Keynote Speakers

Eric Beckman

ERIC BECKMAN

Professor, University of Pittsburgh

Eric Beckman received his Ph.D. in polymer science and engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1988. After postdoctoral research at Battelle’s Pacific Northwest Laboratory in 1987-88, Dr. Beckman assumed his faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh (1989). Dr. Beckman was promoted to associate professor in 1994, and full professor in 1997. Dr. Beckman received a Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1992, and the Presidential Green Chemistry Award in 2002. Dr. Beckman previously served as Associate Dean for Research for the School of Engineering (1999-2001) and Chairman of Chemical Engineering (2000-2005). Dr. Beckman’s research group examines the use of molecular design to solve problems in green engineering and in the design of materials for use in tissue engineering. In 2003, with support from the Heinz Endowments, the Bevier estate, and John Mascaro, Dr. Beckman created the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, a school of engineering institute that examines the design of more sustainable infrastructure. In 2005, Dr. Beckman co-founded Cohera Medical Inc. (with Michael Buckley) to commercialize surgical adhesive technology developed at the University. Dr. Beckman took an entrepreneurial leave of absence from the University in 2007-2009 to help move the products to market; the company currently has 35 employees in Pittsburgh and Germany and has raised over $70 million to support development and commercialization. In 2014 an FDA PMA panel voted to approve the first product, TissuGlu® for use in patients in the US. The second product, Sylys® surgical sealant, has completed its safety trials in the EU and is in the midst of the IDE process in the US. Dr. Beckman’s research group has produced over 200 publications in the area of molecular design and more than 40 patents.

John Frazier, Nike

JOHN FRAZIER

Senior Director - Better Chemistry COE, Nike

Mr. Frazier serves as the director of Considered Chemistry for Nike, seeking to deliver more from less, by focusing on closed loops, greener chemistry, climate stability, water stewardship, and thriving communities. His duties include the development, deployment, and oversight for a variety of sustainability and product stewardship programs for the company. These include the Restricted Substance list (RSL) and Sustainable Chemistry Guidance, the Global Water Quality Program, and the Green/Healthier Chemistry Program at Nike. Mr. Frazier has over 20 years experience, serving product engines in aerospace and athletic footwear, apparel and equipment, as well as environmental programs, through materials and process engineering and chemistry applications. He frequently provides supply chain training and presents at chemistry and water symposia, raising the environmental awareness of consumers, industry, students and young scientists. He holds a master’s degree in chemistry from San Diego State University.

Bob Kumpf, Elevance

BOB KUMPF

Chief Technology Officer, Elevance

With more than 25 years of experience, Bob was most recently Chief Operating Officer at Plextronics, a leader in the research, development and commercialization of conductive and semi-conductive polymers and ink formulations, which enable the commercialization of printed electronic devices. Previously, he served as Chief Administrative Officer at Bayer MaterialScience and also held executive leadership roles in the company’s polymer division, polyurethane division, plastics division and future business group, and served two European assignments. He currently holds 20 U.S. and European patents and has published 21 articles in various scientific journals. Bob has a doctorate degree from the materials science and engineering department at The Pennsylvania State University.

Scott Allen

SCOTT ALLEN

Co-founder & VP of Catalyst Development, Novomer, Inc

Scott Allen is a co-founder and the VP of Catalyst Development at Novomer, Inc. Novomer is commercializing a family of high-performance, cost effective, environmentally responsible polymers and chemicals based on proprietary catalyst technology. A key advantage to Novomer's technology is the ability to combine traditional chemical feedstocks with either carbon dioxde or carbon monoxide to provide polymers and chemicals with up to 50% by weight of the CO2 or CO.

Scott earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Ph.D from Cornell University. His Ph.D. thesis work focused on the design and synthesis of catalysts that use CO2 as a building block for producing polymers. He completed his Ph.D. in 2004 and helped launch Novomer later the same year. At Novomer, Scott has been involved with numerous company functions and is currently leading the research and development effort aimed at designing and scaling-up new materials.

Tammy Ayers is the Manager, Materials Chemistry Strategy & Practice as part of the Global Environmental Sustainability team at Steelcase Inc. The global leader in the office furniture industry, Steelcase delivers a better work experience to its customers by providing products, services and insights into the ways people work. Its portfolio includes architecture, furniture and technology products. In this role, Tammy leads a cross-company effort to ensure the company achieves its global sustainability goals, with an emphasis on understanding the materials used in product development and production. She is responsible for integration of the materials chemistry environmental platform.

Monica Becker

Monica Becker & Associates Sustainability Consultants is a multi-disciplinary provider of sustainability solutions for businesses, trade associations, universities, governments and NGOs, with a particular focus on chemicals. Monica also serves as the Deputy Director of the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3), helping to lead and manage the organization as well as leading project groups. Prior to starting MB & Associates, Monica held management positions at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability, the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction and Tellus Institutes, and Eka Chemicals (now AkzoNobel). Monica has masters’ degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering and Technology & Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Libby Bernick

Senior Vice President, North America, Trucost

Libby Bernick is Senior Vice President of North America for Trucost, a London-based research firm that measures and financially values natural capital. Since 2000, Trucost data and econometric tools have been used worldwide by investors and corporations to quantify environmental performance and risk in business terms and build more resilient business models, portfolios, and supply chains.

As a member of Trucost's senior leadership team, she manages the company's North American business. Libby has worked in executive positions developing products and programs that enable companies to measure resource and commodity risks in portfolios and supply chains across North America, Europe, and Asia. An author of numerous articles and a frequent speaker at international industry forums on valuing natural capital, Bernick is expert in business strategies that incorporate sustainability-based market opportunities and environmental metrics. Ms. Bernick has degrees in engineering, chemistry and biology and over 30 years of experience working with businesses to integrate environmental performance into operations and decision-making.

Ann Blake

Principal and Founder, Environmental & Public Health Consulting

Ann Blake is an independent consultant working with governments, occupational health, and public health and environmental advocates to find viable alternatives to toxic chemicals in manufacturing and consumer products. Dr. Blake’s work covers toxics reduction strategies from product content screening and environmentally preferable purchasing to drafting local, national and international legislation and chemical policies. Dr. Blake has a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in molecular genetics and neural development from the University of Oregon.

Johanna Brickman

JOHANNA BRICKMAN

Director of Collaborative Innovation, Oregon BEST

Johanna engages Oregon BEST’s diverse partners in collaborative clean technology innovation to achieve economic strength in Oregon. She leads the development of cleantech industry research agendas, brings together applied research teams, acts as a liaison to complementary regional and national organizations, and serves as an advocate to policy makers, industry and university partners, nonprofits and the media. Prior to joining Oregon BEST, Johanna served for nine years as Associate Partner and Director of Sustainability at ZGF Architects. Johanna’s volunteer efforts include: two terms as an elected board member of the International Living Future Institute, where she served a year as Chair; as well as serving as an advisor to Biomimicry Oregon, and participating in the Bonneville Power Administration’s Commercial Buildings Emerging Technologies Technical Advisory Group and their Technology Innovation Office’s research proposal review team. Johanna is a mother of two, a musician, and lives on a dormant volcano in southeast Portland.

Sean Cady

Vice President, Global Responsible Sourcing, VF Corporation

Mr. Cady serves as Vice President Global Responsible Sourcing in VF's Global Supply Chain organization. Under Mr. Cady's leadership, the Global Responsible Sourcing department leads product stewardship for all VF products, creates supply chain sustainability improvements across the entire supply chain, and accelerates factory social and environmental leadership. The product stewardship team ensures best-in-class management of product personal and environmental impacts through design and manufacturing due diligence, regulatory compliance and government relations, reduction of product environmental impacts, and management of the Restricted Substance List (RSL).

Amanda Cattermole

AMANDA CATTERMOLE

Consultant, Cattermole Consulting

Amanda leads Cattermole Consulting Inc., and is an advocate for the adoption of safer chemicals. While at Levi Strauss and Co., Amanda led the research and development of safer alternatives to chemicals of concern and developed guiding principles for how to identify, use and manage chemicals in products and supply chains. She led a work stream for the multi-stakeholder group known as Zero Discharge of Hazard Chemicals, (ZDHC) a collaborative effort by leading apparel brands committed to reducing the environmental impact in the apparel and footwear supply chain.

Amanda holds a Bachelors degree in Color Chemistry from Leeds University and a Masters degree in Textile Chemistry from UC Davis.

David Constable

DAVID CONSTABLE

Director of the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute

David J.C. Constable is the Director of the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute®. In this role he works to catalyze and enable the implementation of green chemistry and engineering throughout the global chemical enterprise.

Until January, 2013 David worked as the owner and principal at Sustainability Foresights, LLC.

David left Lockheed Martin as the Corporate Vice President of Energy, Environment, Safety & Health in September 2011.

Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, David was the Director of Operational Sustainability in the Corporate Environment, Health, and Safety Department at GlaxoSmithKline after holding positions of increasing responsibility and global reach.

Andy Dicks

ANDREW DICKS

Senior Lecturer, Chemistry

Andrew (Andy) Dicks joined the University of Toronto Chemistry Department in 1997 and was hired as a teaching-stream faculty member four years later. He has research interests in undergraduate laboratory instruction that involve designing novel and stimulating experiments, particularly those that showcase green chemistry principles. Following promotion in 2006, he became Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies and developed an ongoing interest in improving the student experience in his department. He has earned several pedagogical awards, including the Canadian Institute of Chemistry National Award for Chemical Education, a 2011 American Chemical Society-Committee on Environmental Improvement Award for Incorporating Sustainability into Chemistry Education and a 2012 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award. He has additionally edited a book for teaching green chemistry ("Green Organic Chemistry in Lecture and Laboratory"), co-authored a primer covering green chemistry metrics, and is currently editing a book entitled "Problem-Solving Exercises in Green Chemistry and Sustainability". In 2014 he was the general chair of the 23rd IUPAC International Conference on Chemistry Education which was held in Toronto.

Matt Dwyer, Patagonia

Matt Dwyer is the Director of Material Innovation & Development at Patagonia and leads a team of 24 members who are responsible for Seasonal Development, Advanced R&D, Color, and Quality. Patagonia’s Material Innovation & Development Team is focused on delivering Patagonia’s Mission Statement to its consumer: Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. The development of and proliferation of high performing Green Chemistry is central to Patagonia’s achievement of its mission statement.

Matt has a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University with a focus in metallurgy and polymer chemistry. Matt has spent 10 years in the Technical Apparel Industry and, prior to his role at Patagonia, spent nearly 8 years at W.L. Gore & Associates in its Technology Division.

Sally Edwards

SALLY EDWARDS

Sc.D Senior Research Associate, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production

Dr. Sally Edwards is a senior research associate at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production. She directs the Sustainable Products Initiative, which promotes the development of safer and greener products through engaging stakeholders, conducting research, and providing information that can spark innovative solutions. Sally facilitates the GC3’s Retailer Leadership Council, whose mission is to promote safer chemicals, materials and products across retail supply chains. She is a founder of the Chemical Footprint Project, which is designed to transform global chemical use by measuring and disclosing data on business progress to safer chemicals. Sally has over 25 years of experience in environmental health, including 14 years at the US EPA in Massachusetts and Alaska. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and provides consulting services to businesses and organizations. Sally holds a MS in Environmental Health Science from Harvard University and a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University. She completed her doctorate in Work Environment at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her book, Beyond Child’s Play: Sustainable Product Design in the Global Doll‐Making Industry was published in 2009.

Tess Fennelly

Tess Fennelly has over twenty years of consulting experience in specialty chemical and polymer related fields. Tess also has eleven years of industry experience with positions in Sales, Business & Market Development, Marketing & Communications, Strategic Planning, and Mergers & Acquisitions. Her extensive background in traditional and sustainable chemistries includes adhesives, coatings, plastics, specialty fibers and specialty chemicals. She worked for Segetis, Air Products and Chemicals, American Cyanamid (Now Cytec) and Stauffer Chemical Company. Tess has a B.S. in Chemistry from Purdue and an MBA from Lehigh University.

Ray Garant

Director of Public Policy, American Chemical Sociey

Ray Garant is director of public policy at the American Chemical Society. His duties include management of ACS policy development and messaging for an agenda that spans scientific innovation, jobs, education, and science policy, as well as the international, environmental and regulatory arenas. He also oversees the ACS Science & the Congress Project, a well-respected program of congressional staff briefings and that improves decision maker’s understanding of the role that science can and should play in public policy, and the Society’s public affairs web presence. He has been the staff secretary for the Society’s Committee on Environmental Improvement for over a decade.

Jim Hutchison

JAMES "JIM" HUTCHISON

Lokey-Harrington Chair in Chemistry, Department of Chemistry and Materials Science Institute, University of Oregon

Dr. Hutchison earned his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Oregon and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Stanford University. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of North Carolina. He joined the faculty at the University of Oregon (UO) in 1994 where he is currently the Lokey-Harrington Chair in Chemistry. His research interests are in green chemistry, materials chemistry and nanoscience. He led the development of the UO's curriculum in green organic chemistry, launched the university's pioneering efforts in Greener Nanoscience and is a member of the Governing Board of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute. He is a founding Associate Editor of the journal Environmental Science: Nano and has served on four National Research Council Committees related to green chemistry, nanoscience and sustainability. He has won a number of awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and an NSF-CAREER award. He is the author of more than 110 refereed publications and a textbook ("Green Organic Chemistry: Strategies, Tools and Laboratory Experiments").

Kaj Johnson

Kaj Johnson is a Green Chef at Method Products in San Francisco formulating environmentally friendly cleaning, laundry and personal care products. The role as a Green Chef is to bring together the very best environmental and human health solutions together with innovative applications to solve consumer needs. The goal is to make every consumer experience a great one that drives them back for more.

Prior to joining Method, Kaj worked in formulation and new business development for 22 years with Clorox helping to launch products like Brita and Greenworks.

Roger McFadden

ROGER MCFADDEN

VP, Senior Scientist, Staples

Mr. McFadden is currently vice president and senior scientist for Staples. Prior to joining Staples, he was the chief science officer for Corporate Express and before that, vice president of technical services and product development for Coastwide Laboratories. Earlier in his career, Mr. McFadden worked as a consulting chemist and product engineer for several chemical manufacturing companies in both the U.S. and Canada. He is a charter member of the Green Chemistry Commerce Council and currently chairs a committee to advance Green Chemistry and the EPA Design for the Environment Formulator Initiatives. He is a member of the California Green Ribbon Science Panel and has served as the chairman of former Oregon governor Kitzhaber’s Community Sustainability Council Workgroup for Cleaning. Mr. McFadden is a frequent speaker on environmental, safety and health topics to health care organizations, educational institutions, public agencies and private corporations.

Molly Morse

MOLLY MORSE

Chief Executive Officer, Mango Materials

Dr. Molly Morse is the CEO and co-founder of Mango Materials, a San Francisco Bay Area-based start-up company that uses methane gas to feed bacteria that manufacture a biopolymer. Molly received her Ph.D. in Civil & Environmental Engineering–with an emphasis on anaerobic biodegradation of biocomposites for the building industry–from Stanford University, and her B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University. Dr. Morse has contributed to multiple patents, publications and presentations. Along with other Mango Materials team members, she is currently working to up-scale the technology of using methane gas to produce a biodegradable polymer.

Martin Mulvihill

MARTIN MULVIHILL

Executive Director, Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry

Marty Mulvihill received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (2009) in synthetic chemistry. As a graduate student with John Arnold and Peidong Yang he developed a sensor to detect trace amounts of arsenic in ground water. As a postdoctoral researcher in the Earth Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, he characterized the stability and fate of nanoparticles in soils and groundwater. Marty has been engaged in educational outreach in many diverse settings including a residential school for high school drop-outs, UC Berkeley, Reed College and San Quentin State Prison. At UC Berkeley, he founded the Green Chemistry and Sustainable Design Seminar, a graduate student organized seminar series which is now beginning its fourth year. For his work bringing green chemistry research and education to the Department of Chemistry, Martin was awarded the 2009 Benjamin P. Boussert Memorial award.

Marty is currently the Executive Director of the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry (BCGC) and postdoctoral researcher in both Public Health and Environmental Engineering. Martin has been developing new green chemistry laboratory exercises for the introductory chemistry curriculum. He has also been coordinating and teaching a new interdisciplinary graduate class in green chemistry. Martin’s current research strives to use the principles of green chemistry to develop sustainable water purification technologies.

Ramaswamy Nagarajan

RAMASWAMY NAGARAJAN

Associate Professor of Plastics Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell

Ramaswamy Nagarajan is an associate professor of Plastics Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and has a science and engineering background with bachelor degrees in chemistry and rubber technology and a doctoral degree in polymer science from the University Massachusetts Lowell. His research interest is in the development of “greener”/sustainable routes to advanced functional materials (polymers, additives and surfactants). His research also includes understanding the mechanistic aspects of enzyme catalysis, developing novel eco-friendly biomimetic catalysts. Working at the interface of science and engineering his research group has been involved in translating fundamental research into engineering applications for advancing technology in new and emerging areas. He is the Co-editor of Journal of Renewable Materials, has published 52 papers in peer-reviewed journals and holds 14 patents. He is also the Co-director of HEROES (Harnessing Emerging Research Opportunities to Empower Soldiers) – a joint research and development initiative of University of Massachusetts and U.S Army.

Amy Perlmutter

Principal, Perlmutter Associates

Amy Perlmutter is an independent consultant whose practice includes strategy, stakeholder engagement, communications, and facilitation to build the green economy. Prior to consulting, Amy was the founding director of the Chelsea Center for Recycling and Economic Development, working with businesses, researchers, and government to increase the use of recycled materials in manufacturing processes in Massachusetts. She has served as the Director of Recycling for the City of San Francisco.

Nagesh Rao

Chief Technologist, US Small Business Administration

G. Nagesh Rao currently serves as Chief Technologist with the US Small Business Administration’s Office of Investment & Innovation. His portfolio of work includes the SBIR/STTR program and coordination of the Fueling Small Business Innovation Interagency Policy Committee for the White House’s Lab to Market Commercialization Agenda.

He is a practicing technologist and commercialization strategist working at the intersection of applied science, law, business, and public policy from both domestic and international perspectives with over 10+ years of successful experience. Nagesh has been afforded the privilege to work with top-tier cutting edge organizations such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Office of Technology Commercialization, The National Academies (NAS, NAE, IOM & NRC), US Department of Commerce (USPTO, EDA, & OIE), LAUNCH, CleanTech Los Angeles, Global Access in Action, NCET2, Innovation Endeavors, Planet Labs, Ecovative Design, Publicbeat, Peek, Stiefel Family Foundation, and most recently Virginia Tech’s Applied Research Corporation.

Joel Tickner

JOEL TICKNER

Director, Chemicals Policy & Science Initiative, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production

Dr. Joel Tickner is Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health and Sustainability at the University of Massachusetts Lowell where he also directs the Chemicals Policy and Science Initiative at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production. He is a leading expert on chemicals regulation, regulatory science, and application of the alternatives assessment in science and policy. He has served as an advisor and researcher for several government agencies, international agencies, non-profit environmental groups companies, and trade unions both in the U.S. and abroad during the past businesses years. He served on the EPA’s National Pollution Prevention and Toxics Advisory Committee as well as the National Academy of Sciences Panel on the Future of Science at the Environmental Protection Agency. He also directs the undergraduate environmental health BS program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He holds a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and a Doctor of Science Degree from the Department of Work Environment at University of Massachusetts Lowell and for three years was an Environmental Protection Agency STAR Fellow.

Saskia VanBergen

SASKIA VAN BERGEN

Green Chemistry Scientist, Washington State Department of Ecology

Saskia started working for Ecology in 2013 as a Green Chemistry Scientist where her main focus has been to help establish a technically strong and vibrant green chemistry program in Washington State. She is also serving as the Project Lead for the Advancing Green Chemistry Education Project as part of the Green Chemistry in Commerce Council and the Washington state member for the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse.

Previously, after working at Madis Botanicals and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Saskia worked as the research organic chemist at East Bay Municipal Utility District. There she researched regulated and unregulated contaminants in drinking water, wastewater and San Francisco Bay sediments and served on the Emerging Contaminant Workgroup for the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in the San Francisco Estuary. She also worked at Green River Community College where she developed and implemented ways to incorporate the principles of green chemistry into the chemistry department.

Saskia has a B.A. in Chemistry from Vassar College and a M.S in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry from the University of California, Davis.

Jason Wadsworth, Wegmans

JASON WADSWORTH

Sustainability Manager, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., is an 85-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Virginia. The family-owned company, founded in 1916, is widely recognized as an industry leader, innovator and consistently named one of the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ by FORTUNE magazine.

Jason has been with Wegmans for 25 years and is responsible for leading the development and implementation of sustainability programs that are good for the environment, people and Wegmans.

Jason is a founding member of the Food Marketing Institute’s (FMI) Sustainability Executive Committee and represents FMI as the retail chair of the Food Waste Reduction Alliance (FWRA); a collaboration of three national trade associations, FMI, Grocery Manufacturers (GMA) Association and the National Restaurant Association (NRA).

Gabe Wing, Herman Miller

Director of Environmental Health and Safety, Herman Miller

Gabe Wing provides the technical leadership for the Design for the Environment (DfE) team. Since joining Herman Miller in 2001, Gabe has created an environmental materials database that allows Herman Miller’s engineers to specify the most eco-effective materials for the new products. A significant portion of his work involves working closely with key industrial partners to optimize current materials and to also identify new, sustainable solutions. In addition, he has led the training sessions that educate designers and engineers on the principles of sustainable product design. Gabe received an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science from Michigan State University in the same discipline. “My primary role is to help make the world a little bit safer by selecting the best possible materials,” says Gabe. He loves a good pickup basketball game, and enjoys running and biking with his wife and young children.

Gary Cohen

GARY COHEN

President, Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth

Gary Cohen has been a pioneer in the environmental health movement for thirty years. Cohen is Co-Founder and President of Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth. He was also instrumental in bringing together the NGOs and hospital systems that formed the Healthier Hospitals Initiative. All three were created to transform the health care sector to be environmentally sustainable and serve as anchor institutions to support environmental health in their communities. Cohen was Executive Director of the Environmental Health Fund for many years. He has helped build coalitions and networks globally to address the environmental health impacts related to toxic chemical exposure and climate change. Cohen is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Sambhavna Clinic in Bhopal, India, which has been working for over 25 years to heal people affected by the Bhopal gas tragedy and to fight for environmental cleanup in Bhopal. He is also on the Boards of the American Sustainable Business Council, Health Leads and Coming Clean. He has received numerous recognitions for his achievements, including: The MacArthur Foundation’s Fellows Award (2015), the White House’s Champion of Change Award for Public Health and Climate Change (2013), the Huffington Post’s Game Changer Award for Health (2012), the Frank Hatch Award for Enlightened Public Service (2007), and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship (2006).

Alyssa B. Schuren was appointed Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation by Governor Shumlin in August 2015. Immediately prior to assuming the role of Commissioner, Schuren served as the Department’s Deputy Commissioner. In that role, she spearheaded Department operations across all program areas, including air, waste and water, drove business process improvements, and advanced the implementation of Vermont’s Universal Recycling law.

Before joining Vermont State Government, Schuren was Development Director for Environment America, a national non-profit. Her work included strategic planning; developing, managing and expanding programs to support a multi-million dollar budget; improving recruitment and retention of staff; and increasing the efficiency of internal operations. Prior to her work with Environment America, Schuren was Executive Director of Toxics Action Center, a New-England-based non-profit that helps to build the capacity of community and neighborhood groups facing difficult environmental challenges. She has a B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in environmental studies, with a minor in political science. She lives in Montpelier with her husband and son.

John is the recipient of the 2014 Perkin Medal, widely acknowledged as the highest honor in American Industrial Chemistry. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from UMass Boston, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Princeton University. After working at the Polaroid Corporation for nearly a decade, he served as tenured full professor at UMass Boston and Lowell (Chemistry and Plastics Engineering). In 2007 he founded the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry, LLC (a research organization developing green chemistry technologies) where he serves as President and Chief Technology Officer, and Beyond Benign (a non-profit dedicated to sustainability and green chemistry education). He is one of the founders of the field of green chemistry, co-authoring the defining text Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice with Paul Anastas. He has published over 200 patents, papers and books. Warner received The 2004 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring, the American Institute of Chemistry's Northeast Division's Distinguished Chemist of the Year for 2002 and the Council of Science Society President’s 2008 Leadership award. Warner was named by ICIS as one of the most influential people impacting the global chemical industries. In 2011 he was elected a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and named one of “25 Visionaries Changing the World” by Utne Reader.

Born in 1954, Nick Brown was brought up in Kent and was introduced to trekking in the Peaks with his father, through the YHA, from the age of ten. Nick walked in Scotland every year and being dissatisfied with the waterproofing products available, he created his own recipe for preserving his boots. It was important to make them waterproof without softening them and losing their essential supportive features. Nick's wax (hence the name Nikwax) was the beginning of a remarkable success story.

In 1977 Nikwax was first produced by Nick, aged 22, in a North London flat with a tea urn, a primus stove, a jug, and materials from the local hardware store. These first commercial products were sold to the outdoor trade by Nick, driving around in a second-hand Morris 1000 van and via Inter Rail into Europe, before moving production to a workshop in Clerkenwell, London. In no time Nick was selling the product to 8 countries! The product was so effective that it set the standard for a new breed of aftercare products under the Nikwax brand.

Now based in Wadhurst, East Sussex, the company employs 187 people across the UK, Poland, Germany and the US, and has an annual turnover of £10 million, with products distributed to 50 countries.

Dr. Sally Edwards is a senior research associate at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production. She directs the Sustainable Products Initiative, which promotes the development of safer and greener products through engaging stakeholders, conducting research, and providing information that can spark innovative solutions. Sally facilitates the GC3’s Retailer Leadership Council, whose mission is to promote safer chemicals, materials and products across retail supply chains. She is a founder of the Chemical Footprint Project, which is designed to transform global chemical use by measuring and disclosing data on business progress to safer chemicals. Sally has over 25 years of experience in environmental health, including 14 years at the US EPA in Massachusetts and Alaska. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and provides consulting services to businesses and organizations. Sally holds a MS in Environmental Health Science from Harvard University and a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University. She completed her doctorate in Work Environment at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her book, Beyond Child’s Play: Sustainable Product Design in the Global Doll‐Making Industry was published in 2009.

Kenneth Geiser is a Professor Emeritus of Work Environment and past Distinquished University Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Dr. Geiser served as a founding Co-Director of the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production and as Director of the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute from its founding in 1990 to 2003. Petra Greiner studied chemistry at the university of Dortmund, started her scientific career in 1980 at Dortmund University where she received her PhD in physical chemistry in 1984. She joined the German Environment Agency, UBA, in 1985 as scientist in the working area of environmental exposure assessment of chemicals, focussing on the development and improvement of environmental fate models, exposure scenarios and degradation pathways of chemicals. From 1989 to 1991 she worked as national expert at the Commission of the European Communities in the chemicals division of DG Environment, where she contributed to the EU wide approach on environmental risk assessment of chemicals. In her further career at UBA she was involved in environmental assessment of products e.g. ecolabelling of detergents, life cycle assessment, sustainable chemistry and all topics of environmental risk assessment of chemicals in different regulatory context e.g. pesticides, pharmaceuticals and Chemicals under REACh. She is head of the department “International chemicals management, pesticides” in UBA’s chemical safety division, and is national coordinator of the OECD testguideline Programme for 15 years now. Main working areas accompagnying the departments’ responsibilities within the respective regulations are sustainable use of pesticides and sustainable chemistry on a regional and international level.

Ashley C. Hall is Senior Manager of Sustainability for Walmart Stores Inc. In her role, Ashley manages sustainability projects across the Consumables and Health & Wellness business, which includes categories such as personal care, household chemical, and over-the-counter. She oversees Walmart’s Sustainable Chemistry Policy, working to increase ingredient transparency in products and drive innovation. In addition, Ashley works across Walmart’s merchandising business on packaging and recycling initiatives.

Prior to joining Walmart, Ashley owned her own small business, providing personalized consulting services to help companies find solutions for recycling and recovering plastic packaging. Steven also became Manager of International Special Products and reported to the company President as part of an acquisitions team. Jim was confirmed by the U.S. Senate August 1, 2013. He is responsible for managing the office which implements the nation’s pesticide, toxic chemical, and pollution prevention laws. The office has an annual budget of over $234 million and more than 1,100 employees.

Jim’s career with EPA spans more than 28 years. He has an M.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a B.A. from the University of Maryland, both in Economics.

Dr. Jack Linard obtained his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry at Northwestern University, after receiving his B.S. in Chemistry from Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina. He has worked for Unilever for over 30 years in a variety of assignments, primarily in laundry and personal care R&D.

Jack’s current responsibility is to head up Unilever’s Personal Care Regulatory Affairs team for North America. In this capacity he leads Unilever’s advocacy efforts on new and proposed regulations so that current and future innovations meet regulatory requirements.

During his tenure at Unilever he also overseen Unilever’s “Over the Counter” drug programs, technical compliance activities, and the management of external issues impacting Unilever on both a North American and global scale. In addition, he has been an active participant in Wal-Mart’s Chemical Sustainability program since its inception in October 2005. He has also been representing Unilever’s interests in responding to green chemistry and chemical management initiatives in various states and in the U.S. Congress.

In his role Jack is also active in several trade associations, serving as the chair of the Grocery Manufacturers Association’s newly formed Personal Care and Household Products Committee and representing Unilever on the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Executive [newly appointed vice-chair] and Communications Committees. He also represented downstream users during his tenure with American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care Advisory Committee from 2010 to 2011.

Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director, Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE)

Dr Avtar Singh Matharu, BSc, PhD, CChem, FRSC, is Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE). The GCCE is an internationally-leading academic facility for the provision of excellence in green and sustainable chemical technologies, processes and products.

He oversees a team of nearly 90 researchers spread across four technology platforms: renewable materials; clean synthesis and platform molecules; microwave processing, and; alternative solvents all focussed on developing green and sustainable industrial process and technologies. As Deputy Director he has forged national and international collaborations both with academia and industry. Last year, Professor Clark and Matharu set up a Global Green Chemistry Centres (G2C2) network which extends our research collaborations to India, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Europe, Mexico, USA, Canada, S Korea and China. As Scientific Lead for Renewable Materials Technology Platform, has managed several major projects totalling £10M+ funded from UK and European initiatives, and direct industrial support.

He has enabled the GCCE to be winner of the Rushlight Award for advanced technologies for recycling of liquid crystals (2008), winner of the Green Gown Award for Research and Development (2013) and, winner of the S-Lab Award for Laboratory Based Teaching and Learning(2014) in recognitionfor training graduate and senior undergraduate students from all over the world and from a variety of backgrounds in practicing sustainability in modern chemistry laboratories.

Ramaswamy Nagarajan is an associate professor of Plastics Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and has a science and engineering background with bachelor degrees in chemistry and rubber technology and a doctoral degree in polymer science from the University Massachusetts Lowell. His research interest is in the development of “greener”/sustainable routes to advanced functional materials (polymers, additives and surfactants). His research also includes understanding the mechanistic aspects of enzyme catalysis, developing novel eco-friendly biomimetic catalysts. Working at the interface of science and engineering his research group has been involved in translating fundamental research into engineering applications for advancing technology in new and emerging areas. He is the Co-editor of Journal of Renewable Materials, has published 52 papers in peer-reviewed journals and holds 14 patents. He is also the Co-director of HEROES (Harnessing Emerging Research Opportunities to Empower Soldiers) – a joint research and development initiative of University of Massachusetts and U.S Army.

John Ortiz leads the product stewardship organization for HP Inc., a $50B annual business. Ortiz’s organization drives environmental design of computer and printer hardware products, ink and toner supplies, and paper products to minimize the impact of HP products throughout the product lifecycle. Ortiz is currently championing circular economy thinking in the Print and PC business. Recently his team has completed two closed-loop recycled polypropylene projects in over 40% of HP’s inkjet cartridges, equal to approximately 5,000 tons of recycled resin annually. With the completion of this latest project, HP now uses recycled plastic in more than 75% of its ink cartridge products. Several other active projects are underway to incorporate recycled plastic into hardware printer products. Ortiz’s team also focuses on product energy reduction and recently marked a milestone of driving an 88% energy reduction across HP’s consumer printer products over the past 5 years.

She leads a global team that is focused on advancing sustainability across the division. Denise has a degree in Sociology and an MBA.

JON SMIEJA

Environmental Chemist, Global Sustainability, Steelcase

Jon received his Bachelors of Science degree in chemistry from the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN) in 2005 and his Ph.D. in Inorganic chemistry from the University of California – San Diego in 2012. His graduate research involved developing molecules for the electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide and water to liquid fuels. Through this research, Jon published ten original research papers and one review article.

Jon started at Steelcase in January of 2013 as a member of the Materials Chemistry team within the Global Environmental Sustainability group where he served as the Environmental Chemist until February 2016 when he transitioned to a role as a Leader of Sustainable Design & Development. His role at Steelcase involves collecting materials chemistry data from suppliers, evaluating that data against human and environmental health criteria, working with suppliers to eliminate chemicals of concern, working on material innovation projects, leading North American Sustainable Design & Development, and communicating with customers in order to provide transparency about Steelcase’s products.

Joel Tickner

JOEL TICKNER

Director, Chemicals Policy & Science Initiative, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, University of Massachusetts Lowell

Dr. Joel Tickner is Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health and Sustainability at the University of Massachusetts Lowell where he also directs the Chemicals Policy and Science Initiative at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production. He is a leading expert on chemicals regulation, regulatory science, and application of the alternatives assessment in science and policy. He has served as an advisor and researcher for several government agencies, international agencies, non-profit environmental groups companies, and trade unions both in the U.S. and abroad during the past businesses years. He served on the EPA’s National Pollution Prevention and Toxics Advisory Committee as well as the National Academy of Sciences Panel on the Future of Science at the Environmental Protection Agency. He also directs the undergraduate environmental health BS program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He holds a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and a Doctor of Science Degree from the Department of Work Environment at University of Massachusetts Lowell and for three years was an Environmental Protection Agency STAR Fellow.

Saskia VanBergen

SASKIA VAN BERGEN

Green Chemistry Scientist, Washington State Department of Ecology

Saskia started working for Ecology in 2013 as a Green Chemistry Scientist where her main focus has been to help establish a technically strong and vibrant green chemistry program in Washington State. She is also serving as the Project Lead for the Advancing Green Chemistry Education Project as part of the Green Chemistry in Commerce Council and the Washington state member for the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse.

Previously, after working at Madis Botanicals and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Saskia worked as the research organic chemist at East Bay Municipal Utility District. There she researched regulated and unregulated contaminants in drinking water, wastewater and San Francisco Bay sediments and served on the Emerging Contaminant Workgroup for the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in the San Francisco Estuary. She also worked at Green River Community College where she developed and implemented ways to incorporate the principles of green chemistry into the chemistry department.

Saskia has a B.A. in Chemistry from Vassar College and a M.S in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry from the University of California, Davis.

Martin Wolf

MARTIN WOLF

Director, Sustainability & Authenticity, Seventh Generation

Mr. Wolf is responsible for ensuring the design of sustainable products at Seventh Generation, Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of ecological household and personal care products. He is also responsible for creating a more sustainable business model, and for creating more sustainable systems of commerce.

Mr. Wolf brings over 40 years of experience in industrial and environmental chemistry to his work, starting with environmental fate and metabolism studies for agricultural chemicals, followed by studies of the occurrence of hazardous chemicals in the environment, conducting life cycle studies of product systems, and designing more sustainable household cleaning products.

Working at Seventh Generation, Mr. Wolf has developed frameworks for environmental product design, helped educate his coworkers, customers, and consumers about the environmental impacts of consumer products and the industries that produce them, successfully lobbied for passage of phosphate bans in a number of states, helped develop standards for voluntary ingredient disclosure, and brought change to the cleaning products industry through more sustainable product designs.

Mr. Wolf holds an M.A. in Chemistry from Yeshiva University (New York) and a B.S. in Chemistry from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts).
