Third-party Evaluation Tools
At a Glance
CleanGredients® is an online database of cleaning product ingredients that meet established criteria for environmental and human health performance. Its goal is to encourage the design of cleaning products that are safer with respect to human and ecological health and safety as well as to provide a market-based incentive for chemical manufacturers to invest in green chemistry research and development.
The database helps formulators identify ingredients with preferable, human health and safety attributes and helps suppliers showcase chemicals with these attributes. Retailers can work with their suppliers to encourage use of these identified ingredients.

GreenBlue develops requirements for environmental and human health performance for cleaning product ingredients, through a consensus-based stakeholder process, in collaboration with the U.S. EPA's Design for Environment (DfE) Program. Stakeholders include government entities, environmental organizations, industry associations, cleaning product formulators and distributors, and chemical manufacturers and suppliers.
Currently, surfactants, solvents, and fragrances are listed in the database, and some chelating agents are under review. Two independent organizations (NSF International and ToxServices) serve as third-party reviewers to evaluate manufacturers' ingredients and provide verified information on standard physical and chemical properties as well as relevant environmental and human health attributes.

Suppliers must provide ingredient information to a third party for evaluation. This includes full information on all ingredients of the product that are intentionally added or present above a certain threshold, company-derived toxicological and fate data, and ingredient biodegradability information.
Cost of Tool
Subscription fees are based on annual chemical product sales for formulators, annual chemical sales for chemical suppliers, and annual operating budgets for NGOs and government agencies. Additional fees must be paid to the 3rd-party reviewers.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths: Provides access to information in a central easy-to-access location. Data is credible due to the required third-party review.
Weaknesses: Currently limited to surfactants, solvents and fragrances in cleaning products. Chelating agents are in review.
