The IEC 62474 is a standard specifying the procedure, content, and form relating to material declarations for products of companies operating in and supplying to the electronics industry. It provides data about restricted and hazardous substances in materials and products that downstream manufacturers can use to promote environmentally conscious design.  IEC 62474 replaces the Joint Industry Guide (JIG).

Tool Description

To harmonize requirements across the supply chain and to improve economic efficiencies, IEC 62474 provides an International Standard for the exchange of material composition data and provides requirements for material declarations. This International Standard benefits the electrotechnical industry by establishing requirements for reporting of substances and materials, standardizing protocols, and facilitating transfer and processing of data. Process chemicals and emissions during product use are outside the scope of the standard.

The IEC 62474 database, found at http://std.iec.ch/iec62474, specifies to the electrical and electronics industry and its suppliers:

1. what substances, substance groups, and material classes need to be included in material declarations; and

2. to software developers, specifications on the data format for the exchange of material declaration data.

This standard has some mandatory reporting requirements for substance groups over a certain threshold, but does not require any specific reporting method for material composition.
